Chamber Minutes November 5th

Gordon Chamber of Commerce Meeting
November 5, 2013

Meeting called to order at 5:30 PM. Present were Chamber Board members Lisa Johnson, Roxie Gatewood, Carol Langer, Mike Shald & Director Bea Lou Hardin. Jean Hess, Tourism Chair, members: Pastor Eltzroth, Jordan Heuther, Chuck Hinn, Joni Elwood, Nancy Scherr, Carolyn Green, Maureen Hess, and Pam Eaton were also present.
Carol Langer moved to pass the minutes of the October meeting with no corrections and the financial report. Joni Elwood seconded. Motion passed.
Bea Lou gave the following report of the Chamber Office activities for October:
Again, this month, the phone has been very busy and we had a request from a family in Idaho for a visitor’s packet, we also had a gentleman stop to ask if he could camp overnight in the park. He was riding his motorcycle across country to raise money for cancer; he also wanted to know if we had a 7th day Adventist Church here. Several request for general information about our town have come in. I had 2 different people come in and want to buy stamps on Saturdays as the post office was closed. Had a lady come in and ask for Nebraska Charms for her bracelet, but could not help her. We were selling Diamond &Denim tickets for the Hospital Foundation but didn’t do to well.
Your Retail Committee has done a great job with the Fall Festival! I love this community! We had a “Chili Chef” come in and tell me that – We ARE having a cook off so get prepared! It is wonderful that the community is becoming involved in the promotions your retail committee have put together! The Festival went well in spite of the fire at Farmers Co-Op. I am sure the crowd would have been larger had the fire not happened. We all feel for the Co-Op for their loss and the hardship it has caused for their business. All of the winners and pictures have posted on the Chamber of Commerce Web Site blog.
We have had 6 new members in September and October! NCAP/Head Start, Eaton’s Country Corner, Gordon Girl Scouts, KSDZ, Cattlemen’s Select Salsa and Linda Vinton Cleaning Service. Linda is the first to pay her 2014 dues as I gave her the last 2 months of this year free. We had Eaton’s Country Corner ribbon cutting on Monday and will be having ribbon cuttings for Open Range, Linda Vinton Cleaning Service and Cattlemen’s Select as soon as they are ready. We are now 100 Members strong.
The Thanksgiving promotion was discussed and Carol Langer made the motion that the Chamber give away $150.00 of Chamber Bucks in the next two weeks. Joni Elwood seconded. Motion passed. Businesses are encouraged to put out a “Chamber Drawing Box” for their customers to enter into the drawing. The first drawing will be Monday the 11 and then on the 18th. Mike will be picking up the entries and the winners will be drawn at the Chamber Office. There will be three winners a week.
The meeting was then turned over to Chuck Hinn and Joni Elwood as they are in charge of the Parade of Lights. We thank them for all their hard work and foresight in making the Parade of Lights so successful!
Joni stated that the entries for the Parade need to be in by December 5th so they know how many floats they will have. The Parade of Lights will be Saturday, December 7th beginning at 6PM and the Kiwanis will be having a Steak Fry at the American Legion after the parade as a Community Christmas Party. They encourage all the businesses to have their Christmas Open Houses the day of the Parade. CARE for Christmas Craft Show and the Methodist Church Craft Show will be that day also. The suggestion was made that possibly the Youth Groups or High School Clubs or others would like to “Decorate the City Park”. Pastor Elzroth will talk to the youth and other clubs and City Manager, Fred Hlava about doing this.
The motion was made by Chuck Hinn that the Prizes for 1st, 2nd & 3rd place and the best window be Chamber Bucks’ A total of $550.00 will be divided up, and that their will be 3 non-partial Judges. Mike Second. Motion passed. The Judges will be picked from New Residents, Associates and Non Residents.
The Christmas Music on the Streets will begin Black Friday, November 29th.
Member Appreciation party was discussed briefly. The Retail Committee is working on a place, time and entertainment. It was decided that January 25th will be the date.
There will not be a meeting in December. The next meeting will be January 7, 2014.
We were all reminded that we all need to remember and encourage our employees to park behind our downtown business so our valued customers have ample parking.
Carol moved that the meeting be adjourned. Joni seconded. Meeting adjourned at 6:35 PM.
