Western Nebraska Development Network Visits Gordon!

Western Nebraska Development Network Visits Gordon!

Wednesday, September 16th the Gordon Chamber hosted the meeting of the WNDN (Western Nebraska Development Network). The WNDN is a collaboration of service providers, community leaders, business owners, tourism enthusiasts and you! WNDN is passionate about making life in Western Nebraska the best it can be and we need your help! Membership is open to anyone who would like to get to know service providers, anyone with an interest in Western Nebraska, and anyone who believes that when we work together, all things are possible.

The meeting was held at the Coffee Nook with 12 members of the WNDN attending, Jordan Heuther, Mike Shald & Bea Lou Hardin representing the Chamber of Commerce. Those attending the meeting represented the Box Butte Development Corporation, UNL Extension, Western Nebraska Community College Sidney Campus, Historic Main Street, Alliance, USDA Rural Development, Alternative Education, Alliance Chamber of Commerce, Alliance Director of Tourism, Nebraska Northwest Development Corporation, Hemingford, & Nebraska Business Development, Department of Economic Development, Governor’s Western Representative.

A round table discussion and update on projects each member has been working on was held. Topics such as Community enhancement and obtaining a Nebraska Certification for the Community. Community Vitality Initive, Housing, Guaranteed loans, Tax breaks for new businesses, Housing rehab, Business expansion, New business, Energy upgrade for businesses, Revolving loan funds, Tourism, Alternative learning schools that provide speech therapy, teacher training and much more for those who have learning disabilities, Marketing your business with Facebook.

Starr Lehl from the Department of Economic development made the comment that Communities must work together, regionally or nothing will happen.  This is so very true in our corner of the world. If we continue to try to go it alone we will limp along doing what we have always done and have a harder time progressing and surviving in our towns. If we band together we can accomplish great things for the whole area and towns will grow and prosper in the future.

An interesting note from the Director of Tourism for Box Butte County, Box Butte did away with Lodging Tax and now has an “Occupancy tax” that funds their Tourism efforts.

After the meeting the group stopped at Essence for a wine tasting and then continued to shop Main Street. The Chamber thanks the WNDN for allowing us to host their meeting and all the information that we gained. Thanks to the Coffee Nook for the pleasant atmosphere and the great food and to Essence for the hospitality.

All in all the bottom line is that there is financial help for communities needing housing, businesses that want to expand or upgrade the energy efficiency of their stores and for new businesses.

Anyone interested in information of those that can help you with your business needs call the Chamber Office 308.282.0730 and we will be happy to share the contacts names and numbers with you.
